Charities and CIC

Specialist Accountancy for Charities & Community Interest Companies

BC&A combines deep sector knowledge with practical, jargon-free advice to help trustees, directors and volunteers stay compliant with the Charity Commission, Companies House and HMRC.

Our Expertise

We understand the unique challenges of this sector

At BC&A, we've spent years supporting charities and CICs across Portsmouth, Hampshire and the wider South of England. We work with small community groups run entirely by volunteers, large registered charities with multi-million-pound income, and everything in between.

Whatever the size, the goal is always the same — to give trustees and directors the confidence that their financial records are accurate, compliant and ready to stand up to scrutiny, so they can focus on the work that actually matters.

Our approach is collaborative and practical. We don't speak in accountancy jargon, we don't disappear between year ends, and we don't treat your organisation like a corporate client. We treat it like what it is, a mission-led organisation where every cost matters and every donor deserves transparency

FAQs

Your Charity & CIC Questions, Answered

What is the Charities SORP and do we have to follow it?
SORP stands for Statement of Recommended Practice — it's the framework that tells charities how to prepare their accounts. If your charity prepares accruals accounts (most do), your accounts must comply with the Charities SORP. Smaller charities with income under £250,000 can choose to prepare simpler receipts and payments accounts instead
The CIC34 is the annual community interest report that every CIC must file alongside its accounts at Companies House. It explains what the CIC has done during the year, who has benefited, and how stakeholders have been consulted. It's due 9 months after the end of your financial year, and late filing triggers automatic penalties. We prepare and file the CIC34 as part of our standard CIC accounts service.
Yes. Gift Aid allows registered charities and CASCs to claim back 25p from HMRC for every £1 donated by a UK taxpayer, which can add up to thousands of pounds each year. We help clients register for Gift Aid, set up donor declaration systems, submit quarterly or annual claims, and make use of the Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme (GASDS) for cash collections and contactless donations.
Yes, giving back to the community is part of who we are. BC&A offers free consultancy and advice to selected charities and non-profit organisations delivering vital work in our community, particularly those around Portsmouth and the South of England.
Absolutely. We provide informal trustee training on reading charity accounts, understanding their legal duties, reviewing management information, and spotting the financial warning signs every trustee should kno
